um... uh.. well.. up until half an hour ago it WAS working.. then I made 
the mistake of rebooting - and i'm back where I was, with the screen
frozen at "starting interprocess communication" and a ton of copies of 
kdeinit etc.  What happened?  I have no idea.  This is a baaaaad bug.

<sigh>  well, at least gnome works, and i can get my e-mail again.
