I tried upgrading my kernel through the software manager last night,
after
which the system wouldn't boot. So I had to boot from a rescue disk,
build
a new initrd.img, and then run lilo.
I suppose I was reckless; but back in my MDK 7.1 days, when I selected
the
kernel package in Mandrake Update, I got all sorts of warnings telling
me
not to do it that way. Fine. But when I selected the kernel package now,
in MDK 8.0, I got no warnings at all. I foolishly assumed that meant
that
you could actually upgrade the kernel from the software manager (nee
Mandrake Update) now. Well, not quite.
