You don't. :-) > trust me, I do. I know computers and can happily solve dependency > problems all day but why praytell MUST I if I don't want to?? Nope. Have you actually tried urpmi? It solves dependencies for you. > How > difficult is it really to release 2 versions of an RPM?? Quite. Have you ever tried to force a given package of any reasonable complexity to build and link statically? In most cases it requires hacking up the Makefiles. I would much prefer Mandrake developers spend their time doing something useful than wasting their time on this kind of effort. > Now that would > offer Mandrake users REAL choice. No it wouldn't. Static vs. dynamic is not an issue because anyone who doesn't want to screw around with dependency issues uses urpmi. If you would take some time out to try out and learn about urpmi you would see that you don't need static packages in order to eliminate dependencies (which is a fallacy anyway... see next point). Making RPMs statically linked will not eliminate dependencies. A lot of packages have dependencies other than dynamic libs. Having static linked packages would not eliminate this dependency problem. So why waste so much time to half solve a problem when that time could be better spent solving real problems? b. -- Brian J. Murrell
