When Mandrake 7.2 came out, there was a lot of criticism for shipping a possibly
broken KDE2.0 (even though there were almost no issues). KDE3.0 thus far looks worse
than 2.0 (judging by compliants about sudden changes just before rc2). It seems both
SuSE and Mandrake learnt something in that experience, and I think the right one is
caution. The problem isn't just KDE, but all the apps that run in KDE, and they
won't be ready for 8.2, and I wouldn't want to wait any longer - this distro is
looking too good.
Also, the changes from KDE2 to KDE3 are not as significant as between 1.4 and 2.0,
so there isn't really that much motivation to use a new, and potentially bug-ridden,
KDE as there was at the release of 2.0.

-stable, memory-efficient kernel
-evolution 1.0
-galeon 1.0
-Mozilla 0.9.8
-Half-decent Nautilus
-OpenOffice 641c (still one or two issues with mdk rpms)
-Kdevelop-2.0.2
-Quanta 2.0.1
-SNF (rocks)
-Samba 2.2.3a with (almost) out the box winbind for integration into windows
domains, XFS ACLs and quotas (of course, a better idea than waiting for KDE 3.0
would be to wait for Samba 2.2.4 ;-))
Well, 8.2 is looking pretty solid for an up-to-date server (if the NFS-XFS issue and
smbfs can be fixed any time soon), and will probably be about the most stable linux
distro for the next 6 months while everyone else tries to fix Gnome 2.0 and KDE 3.0.

Why not rather have an optional KDE3.0 (and Gnome 2.0 too) update CD, if KDE3.0
turns out to be useable, and if enough are interested, sell it only on
Mandrakestore.com for a decent price.
KDE 3.0 betas are in contribs anyway, if you want a broken desktop ;-)
