smbfs uses smbmount (part of samba) to negotiate the connection. The bug
is with character translations of smbfs, and -7mdk added new
codepages/character sets, which someone has reported as fixing their
problem with smbfs. I don't think this is the problem (trying the
2.4.18-7mdk kernel from Juan's site should be the real fix), but since I
can't reproduce your problem, it would be nice to know for sure.
