Not only agreed, but there's data SOMEWHERE that I've read (in some management literature, or maybe parenting?) about how the best way to mess up a group is to have inequitable behavioral standards.
The subtlety comes in whether/how much to work with people to get them to stop squeaky-wheeling. Of course, it depends on how that manifests. In family, the family must work a lot at rehabilitation - though obviously many families do have limits (in some families it's criminality; in others it's marrying improperly...). What kind of risk is too much for the entity to bear? Ostracization is an interesting thing. So, I guess I think of this as more broadly what's the community standard, and more importantly how does the community deal with breaches in those standards? In this specific case: the standard that is intolerable in online communities is personal abuse, and it's tough to throw people out of a community, but it does have to be done when the line is crossed. -j Keep in mind this is just based on anecdotal observation....there must be anthropologists afoot who can really address this?
