Following on from Andrew's question: I must confess that I'm completely confused by the way one is supposed to get a working Coot version up and running. What is /the/ official way of getting /the/ official Coot version up and running? According to https://www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/groups/murshudov/ the official Coot site is https://www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/personal/pemsley/coot/ where I can see: [Download Binaries]: release: 0.8.9.1 from April 2018 pre-releases: 0.8.9.3 from January 2020 [Latest Builds]: 0.8.9.2 from January 2019 [Build Coot from scratch]: pointing to https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pemsley/coot/refinement/build-it that script (5.35 20190401) has things like if test "$OS" = Darwin ; then . /usr/local/ccp4-6.0.2/bin/ccp4.setup-sh fi which suggests a fairly specific setup. Is this nevertheless the script one should use? Will/Should it work on modern Linux (Centos 7/8, Ubuntu 18.04/20.04, Debian 9/10 etc) and/or OsX? The Github link above suggests that maybe https://github.com/pemsley/coot is the correct place to find Coot binaries and/or installation instructions. The main page there points me to the "Coot Development Blog" at https://pemsley.github.io/coot/ which seems to report mainly on new developments. The other link is again (back) to the MRC/LMB page described above. Is it maybe the procedure described in INSTALL (from August 2016) that one should follow? Or one of build-it-gtk2 (July 2013) build-it-gtk2-Darwin (April 2008) build-it-gtk2-simple (September 2016) Is one of those pages maybe still relevant: https://strucbio.biologie.uni-konstanz.de/ccp4wiki/index.php/Custom_building_Coot_from_source_code http://scottlab.ucsc.edu/xtal/wiki/index.php/Stand-Alone_Coot or the links from the "Coot FAQ": https://www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/personal/pemsley/coot/docs/coot-faq.html namely 2 Building and Installing 2.1 I have Mac OS X. How do I get coot? 2.2 How do I make the binary release work? 2.3 Which binary tar file shall I use? 2.3.1 Coot on 64-bit RHEL 6 2.3.2 Additional Note for SuSE 9.1 2.3.3 Additional Note for SuSE 9.3 2.3.4 Additional Note for SuSE 10.1 Obviously, Coot is a highly sophisticated software package with a lot of external dependencies - so a big "Thank you" to anyone providing pre-compiled binaries of Coot (especially CCP4). If someone has a meaningful set of instructions to compile Coot starting from the Github sources (so one can follow Paul's advice to test the latest version), it would be very much appreciated! Thanks a lot for any hints/remarks!
