Jimbo: The short shafts with the sprockets on the front end of the control
column are not held in place with any keeper. On serial # 170, after
removing
the U joints, all that was required was copious amounts of WD-40. I let
them
soak for about 30 minutes, and then removed them by twisting and pulling
on
the sprocket end. The short shafts run in two bronze bushings and
corrosion/dirt builds up which seems to hold the shafts in place. Of
course,
you must take the chain and cables loose and remove the chain from the
sprockets before removing the short shafts from the control column. Hope
this
helps.
