Jimbo: The short shafts with the sprockets on the front end of the control column are not held in place with any keeper. On serial # 170, after removing the U joints, all that was required was copious amounts of WD-40. I let them soak for about 30 minutes, and then removed them by twisting and pulling on the sprocket end. The short shafts run in two bronze bushings and corrosion/dirt builds up which seems to hold the shafts in place. Of course, you must take the chain and cables loose and remove the chain from the sprockets before removing the short shafts from the control column. Hope this helps.
