No STC is necessary.

The type certificate for the Coupes, Aircraft Specification A-787 which
covers
everything from the 415-D up through the Mooney M-10 Cadet, has a section
which
tells EXACTLY what's necessary to convert a 415-C to be LEGALLY a 415-D.

This conversion gives the legal ability to have up to 1400 lb. gross
weight.

If the type certificate says you can do it, you can do it -- legally. But
follow the rules they give exactly.

Summary: The big thing is to replace the sheet metal over the fuel tank
(under
the cowl) with stainless steel to protect you in case of fire in the
engine
compartment. The 415-C should have had this, by the safety rules, but a
paperwork mistake let it slip by.

The next biggest thing is to put a multi-piece baffle to direct extra air
around the oil tank.

The real change (but an easier one) is to change the restricter ring on
the
control shaft so you only get 9 degrees of up travel. This prevents
dangerously
unstable behavior at full up elevator at full power and max gross weight.
The
down side is about 5 mph higher touch down speed and you can't horse up
the
nose at low speed so keep your head engaged when landing.

There's some other stuff -- it's spelled out in the specification. I
think
the
415-D's landing behavior is good enough for me, and I certainly need the
extra
gross weight allowance and the financial protection of doing it legally.
