Hi

I just re-purchased a 415C Ercoupe that I sold 13 years ago. The
plane is in very good shape and has been well cared for. I enjoy it
very much except for one very nasty problem.

Climbing out or flying along at RPM's from 2000-2300 the engine will
suddenly lose power. Pull the carb heat and it quickly resumes
running again. It may run for a few minutes or an hour. The engine
is healthy, the carb has been checked over, and is perfect. I did
find one of the bushings that support the carb heat flapper had come
adrift and repaired it and made sure it has full movement from cool
air to warm air.

All the fuel system is clear and delivers lots of fuel to the carb,
which is a Stromberg. Many people would say my problem is carb ice,
but it gives no notice - it just suddenly drops off and resumes with
carb heat.

I have been a mechanic most of my sixty years, and have a very good
sense of engine sounds and problems. I would say the engine is
running too lean. Pulling the carb heat in effect richens the
mixture. Also an indication of the engine running too lean is that
when the mixture knob is slowly pulled out, the engine never gains a
few RPM as normal, but only goes from the RPM set to a quick drop
off in RPM. Normally an engine is set to run slightly rich and
speeds up a little when leaned.

The engine is a C-75 upped to 85, with a 1-3/8" venturi and number
45 main jet. I know Ercoupes are quite well known for carb ice but
I don't think my problem can be normal or a lot more 'coupes' would
end up in the bushes.

I would also be interested in hearing from others on their
adventures with carb ice or apparent fuel starvation. Any help
would very much be appreciated. I'm running out of adrenalin.
