----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Jon,
Does seem strange..... I once had a somewhat similar problem, in that in full power climb, the engine quit; pulled the heat, and it continued to run, etc... scared me to death...Mother's first flight ! On landing, I examined the carb and inlet area and found the carb heat flap loose on the shaft...one attachment bolt missing, and the other almost gone...This allowed the flap to be sucked up into the inlet housing and choked off all airflow.. Pulling the carb heat control moved the plate so the engine could still run.... The flap was on the carb side of the shaft....instead on the inlet side of the shaft.... When a bolt was lost, this allowed the flap to move into the throat, and block the air flow. On repair, I placed the flap on the inlet side of the shaft, so that if ever came loose again, it would not be able to block the air flow..... But, this doesn't seem to be your problem...... I would suggest checking the float level in the carburetter.... maybe the float is sticking, etc...carefully check the possibility that a weight being added to the float due to needle valve replacement - and binding; or causing an inproper float level....thus lean engine mixture....I have seen both binding and improper float levels resulting from improper repair involved with the new Delrin plastic needle valve & seat...which requires the added weight...See service Bulletin ACSB 84- (you can find the bulletin in the Univair catalog) Best of luck, Harry Francis 93530 Blacksburg, VA.
