The gear broke at the 1/2 way point between the attachment at the top =
and the axle. At the most curved point. No other damage or cracks were =
observed.
I called the Mooney factory in Texas yesterday and talked to a really =
neat man named Bill Wheat.
Bill is now 70yrs old but he was the test pilot for the M-10. He told me =
that the only engine failure he had ever had was in Serial #690001. Then =
he laughed.
He said he put it down in a cornfield and that neither he or the plane =
were hurt. He said the plane was later sold.
I asked him about a problem with the spring gear and he said he did not =
remember anything about a problem with it.
He said the trailing gear was an option and not a replacement due to =
failure.
He said if he finds out any more information about it, he will call me.
 Hope this answers your question.
 Mary

I too have not heard of previous instances of spring gear failure -- =
and I
sure do keep my ears open for such things. Have people seen attach =
bolt
failures? Mary, I would appreciate knowing the exact location where =
you had
metal failure -- I couldn't quite localize it from what you said =
initially.
Do you also see other cracks at locations not at the failure point?
