Ken,
I think I'd  wonder about what type of shellac was used to coat the
float. I've read about people doing that with great results but wondered how
many had suffered the same fate. Is there any specified product or reference
to any number to use other than replacement. Is the "shellac" AVGAS / Autogas
compliant etc.etc.
The primer would work in an emergency if the blockage was further
downstream of the on/off valve on the header tank. I pulled the tank outlet
on my header tank to clean and inspect it. I suppose a flake could get past
it but it would be so small that I can't imagine it would block a fuel line.
But it definatly could block a needle/seat or jet.
On a similliar note: I had a blockage in the line to my oil press.
gauge. Started out reading 50 psi and during run-up it peetered out to 5 psi.
Pulled the line and cleared the obstruction (don't have a clue what it
was...old gasket or something left in there from the re-build 10 hours prior).
