I think what you are asking all depends on what flight instruments are on
board. If you have a radio and transponder, that isn't a good practice as
you are making the Battery the primary power source with an alternator
backup. They may not draw much, but the surges associated with kicking in
an alternator can't be good on the electronics. All would depend on if
there were some kind of built in surge suppression which I seriously
doubt.
Then again, if you are using navigational lights and a beacon, along with
whatever else, you are definitely drawing on that battery power. Like
anything else, a battery backs up the alternator and vise versa creating
some redundancy. You are eliminating a back up by switching it out. As
far as FAA acceptance of that type of mod, they might look at the fact
that
turning it back on can easily be forgotten. Not to mention the increase
of
yet another task during your climb out if something were to go wrong.

Just my humble opinion!

This may stir up a sandstorm, but it is not my intent.....My question
concerns not the amperage or wattage of the alternator (as I'm not sure
which mine is yet!), but something I've been told about the 'coupe I
recently
bought.
She is a '46 C w/a C90. The fellow in Texas who sold her to the guy I
bought her from had all the work done but never turned in the paperwork
for
the conversion, although I understand he flew her as such....I have the
paperwork, so that will get done.
Now, long story done....he installed a switch cutting out the
alternator
after she was warmed up and ready for TO...supposedly adding 5-6 HP to the
TO
power ( that could work ), and then he would turn the switch back on at
altitude. Is this a legal mod? Should I remove it during the restoration
or
can I cover it with a STC or 337?
   Any advice is welcome..............Thanks, Cliff
