Every alternator installation must have a switch to break the "field"
(generator term) circuit.  This effectively shuts the alternator off.
Turning it on and off for takeoff sounds like the work of a fanatic.  If
you're not loading the electrical system down, then the alternator won't
sap
much power.  If you are, then you need it on line!
