I wonder though if as crazed as the FAA seems to be about major modifications lately, it wouldn't be nearly impossible to get it signed off in the current climate. I mean, we're having a bitch of a time getting them to let us put the split tail on a 415! You know, if it were me (and it isn't) I might just try and avoid cutting metal and find Cherokee, 172, Beech Skipper, or Tomahawk on which hand controls could be fitted. Or just for fun, even a Breezy (hey, no fuselage, no doors, no obstructions) which is an Experimental and you can do what you want with it. Consider also an ultralight with no ailerons (kinda sloppy, I admit). BUT check out 'trikes' The fellow in the hangar next to me has one of those. It's a legitimately rudderless ultralight and it does quite the job. He flies it all over the state of NJ, flies nearly every day, and just loves it. Basically a wing with a 3-wheeled powerplant frame and wheels hung by a U-joint. I'm not saying you shouldn't pursue the door-in-the-Coupe idea, I'm just suggesting that there may be some faster and less frustrating (=more fun) paths to getting airborne again.
