Not to worry, Steve.
My Coupe even hesitates in summer since it has no accelerator pump.
You may have a different carb.

Don't lock your primer.
When your engine starts, just keep pumping the primer as required until
the engine smoooooths out.
Then lock it and be on your way.

Works for me in 20 F.
Below that I stay home or at least on the ground.
Also consider preheating the engine.
Engine life is extended greatly by doing this I am told.
I use a dipstick heater and/or a kerosene fired hot air unit.
Both require electricity that are in my hangar.
