Good comments on learning to fly safely. I first flew J 3,s, then soloed in a PA-18, then to T-6s.....Cherokees 140, 180, Arrows, 300 -6 , etc., etc...
Then I bought an Ercoupe in 1981... had always loved the airplane since first seeing one in 1946 - when visiting the airport and wishing....and learned what Mr. Weick had accomplished. Now, I am concerned about staying current in 3 control airplanes, and proficient, so I do bi-annuals in C-152s & 172s.... maybe I ought to even go the whole way back to a C-140, or PA-18, J-3, or Aeronca.....but --- I do think one can become a little too complacient in flying such a super controlable airplane as the Coupe...the Coupe almost does all the flying - but REMEMBER - the pilot shouldn't be "the loose nut" that causes problems. Stay proficient - the flight is not over till you're at the tie down spot with the engine off and all switches and fuel off. I certainly encourage that all pilots do some three control flying - maybe even some tail dragger flying to keep your senses sharp -every now and then. Maybe trade some time with your three control owner type friends - so both of you get to know flying better. For those of you who have not flown three control machines lately (or ever) - or tail draggers - be sure to do so with an instructor who is aware of your shortcomings.... even the slowest of the airplanes can get ahead of you real fast.... It really is good experience, and just makes you appreciate the work done by Fred Weick and group in developing the Ercoupe. Fly Safe - Have Fun Regards, Harry Francis N 93530 Blacksburg, Va.
