I'm way behind in my coupe list reading and have just caught up with this topic. I use a short length of plumber's chain (like on the flapper valve in your water closet) and a couple of s-hooks. Just pick how many "links" wide you want the gap to be...and it's probably faster than either the shoestring or the velcro.
