I keep a shoe string in the plane that I tie between the two halves so
there will be a 1-3 inch gap at the top.  This greatly enhances my
airflow without blowing me out of the plane.  One other pilot suggested
leaving them clamped and sliding them off center so there's a gap at the
bottom on one side.  These low-tech solutions get the job done if you
just need a few inches of gap.
