Kim's response to Mac's engine quitting problem came as an attachment for
me, and until I got Keyview (Commercial viewing program), I had trouble
reading some attachments. Kim's response was important enough, that since

others may have the same viewing problem, I have copied Kim's response in
full and placed it in the body of this msg. The following is from Kim:

I had a similar problem that drove me crazy for a while but
I think that I
may have found the cause. I had the Carb overhauled 2 times
but it did not
fix anything.

My Coupe was an early 46 model and the fuel level in the
center (header)
tank was controlled by an adjustable standpipe in the center
tank. The fuel
level was to low and I believe that there was not adequate
pressure or fuel
level to keep the engine running in an extended climb. It
never did it on
takeoff but only on climb out maybe after 5 or 10 minutes
but it would do it
pretty regularly. It would run good after dropping the nose
and what seemed
like an awful long time. Probably a minute at the most but
it would sure get
your attention, trust me.

Anyway the previous owner had replaced the seal around the
overflow tube in
the header tank and had not adjusted the overflow level high
enough and the

center tank fuel was running too low. I raised the overflow
tube over an inch
and the center tank fuel raised accordingly. There must be
a measurement for
this somewhere in a maintenance manual but I have never
found it. This
problem was eliminated on Ercoupe serial number 3221 an on
by mounting the
overflow on the back of the tank at the factory thus fixing
the overflow level
properly.

The mechanic who overhauled my Carb persuaded me to run
more Avgas over
Mogas saying that the gum in Mogas can cause problems. I
have seen with my
own eyes some pretty nasty stuff in fuel systems that had
only Mogas run in
them, especially aircraft that were not flown regularly.
