My coupe is a mod. D, with up and down sliding (side/overhead) windows. When opening the windows in flight the noise and turbulence is powerful. My head set did stay on, the baggage compartment was closed. The temperature was in the low 90's and I was at 6000ft MSL. The plane was at or slightly over gross. With the window open the coupe slowed aprox 5 mph and I could no longer hold altitude, 85 hp, full throttle, until the window was closed. However cracking it open four or five inches, for ventilation didn't seem to make a noticeable difference.
Re: rudder pedals and slipping. The rudder pedals don't have a lot of control compared to the ailerons. I do use them to lose altitude in a slip for landing and they help, but not as much as I was used to in my Aeronca Champ. They are not useful in a heavy cross wind landing so I use the awkward feeling crab landing instead. There just isn't enough rudder surface. You probably know: when turning right only the right rudder operates, while turning left only the left one operates. I've never flown a Coupe without pedals but I don't think it would be much of a sacrifice, if any. For everyone out there, I got tired of standing on the right rudder while flying (to overcome the engine torque), so I made and installed a ground adjustable rudder trim tab on the right rudder and now I fly straight with my feet off the pedals. Has anyone else with rudder pedals done that to their Coupe? Jack Gocha N103JF, SN:745
