Ed, some stainless steel is slightly magnetic.  The best way to tell
stainless from aluminum is to rub
it with Scotch-brite or rubbing compound.  Aluminum will brighten up
immediately but stainless takes
quite a bit of rubbing.  Also, aluminum when rubbed leaves a black residue
on the rag, but stainless
will not.
