Steve,

I must admit I spin the prop by hand for two reasons.  One, in the winter
I
believe it frees up the engine and puts less strain on the starting system
(this could be an old wives tale FAIK).  I have also heard it distributes
oil on the cylinder walls.

Second, I turn it over four times and make sure there is compression on
each
cylinder.

I do always stop the engine with the mag switch (the mixture will not stop
my engine) and I keep well away from the blade arc.
