The Fram filter is a bypass filter. Some oil is diverted through the filter and drains back to the sump. The majority of the oil passes through the screen and takes the normal circuit through the engine. The El Reno filter is a full flow filter. All the oil passes through it before being sent into the oil galleys. (I'm going to check tonight to confirm this, but if you have the Continental C-series overhaul manual, it has an oil flow diagram.) This pad on the engine was originally designed for the oil cooler. The cooler assembly itself had a bypass to help control temperature and prevent oil starvation if the oil congealed in the cooler.
The El Reno filter does provide measureable cooling, for the reason you've stated. Just be sure you inspect the filter (unless you've still got the screen, then you can get by inspecting it, if you choose. 6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other...) Keep 'em safe. John
