I believe in adding a filter. The screen takes out the larger chunks, but does not remove the small abrasives. Very large chunks (or many chunks) can collapse the screen, which is a very large problem. I've had my filter for about 9 years, but still change oil (and filter) every 25 hours. "Oil is cheaper than engines." My engine also has the proper baffling, and runs about 90 degrees above ambient. The filter does help cool the engine.
