Steve, I expect this is due to the high degree angle of incidence of the 
wing. The high angle helps to keep the coupe co-ordinated in a turn as the

"high wing" looses some lift (and drag), and accompanied by differential 
aelirons, therby resulting in coordinated flight. In a two control coupe,
you 
just let it flop around. In an Alon, you might be able to control it 
somewhat, by use of the rudders.????

On the retractrable coupe - the angle was reduced considerable, and the
wings 
redesigned to accomodate the retractable gear. 
 
Some ultralites have excessive angle of incidence, which alllowed turns 
without rudders.

I think that makes sense.
