Rob: I've polished the 1/3 of my Alon which is bare. I concur that polishing by hand is no more labor-intensive than a buffer. Yes, cornstarch works great and seems to take off the remainder of the polish (and black oxide) which are both far more abrasive than cornstarch. Babies' bottoms would be very red if cornstarch was abrasive.
Personally, I only like looking at the polished finish while
on the ground. Aloft, it often shines in my eyes and
definitely reflects a lot of heat. Even though I hangar 59V
in a generally dry climate, polishing seems to be a 3 times
per year activity to keep it clean and looking good, while
paint keeps out corrosion. I've converted my props to paint
finish on my IA's advice and when I scrape together the $$$,
I'm going to paint the whole plane.
