I agree with most of Greg's comments. To me, the dilemma would be whether
I want to be a pioneer, and support a good thing and buy the engine and
STC, and take what I think could be a substantial risk, for quite a few
years, that the distributor and PZL will both be around for parts and
product support. There's no easy answer to this one.
As for liability issues, I make my living defending manufacturers, FBOs,
flight schools, airports, etc. in litigation. No one knows better than I
do how the U.S. legal system is abused by some claimants.
To the converse, there are meritorious cases where people deserve, and get
compensation. I've had these cases also. From personal experience, I can
tell you that going after a foreign manufacturer is tough, even if they
are insured by a European insurance company. These people have different
standards of compensation in their countries, and they often just don't
understand our system.
It's easy to criticize the American system, and the inevitable abuses that
do occur. However, when it's your butt that gets busted when a true
defect in a product causes an accident, most people suddenly think
differently.
So, like in most every situation, there are two sides to that story.
