No change after a recompilation. I'm going back to an older state of my machine now to start over with a clean environment. Finding mistakes and bugs in this thing is pointless.

How great - now Courier-IMAP doesn't want to compile. Here's what it said:

(...)
Compiling imaplogin.c
imaplogin.c:35:32: courierauth.h: No such file or directory
imaplogin.c:36:37: courierauthdebug.h: No such file or directory
(...)

But at least authlib looks a bit more promising now, syslog says it was loading the mysql module, and nothing else. Although authtest only said "Authentication FAILED: Input/output error", but the MySQL log shows the query I expected and running it in the mysql client returns the right row. Maybe my older state was too old or somehow else unusable. Guess it's time to fully test my setup script until that point and start over with a brand new Debian installation. How good it is to test it all in an environment that you can just throw away when you make a mistake... Now this will take me some days again, I'll check back if new problems arise. And next time, I'll set a restore point right before the courier installation! Thanks so far.

Btw, in all this, the DEBUG_LOGIN=2 gave me nothing that I didn't also get without it. Maybe you should really check the operativeness of that thing... Iirc, debug output has always been a weakness of courier-related software.
