Have you considered comparing access speed/CPU utilization with a
webmail solution that is not PHP based?  Perhaps something like
squirellmail will help you figure out if the problem persists at the
courier level or if it is strictly a webmail problem.  Out of
curiousity, what webmail solution are you using now?
