To back up what Sam writes, (one of) my site's been running SquirrelMail 1.5.1 on Courier IMAP since 2004 with (privileged) virtual users (350+ active such) with up to 500MB per mailbox and each with up to many thousands of messages (over 20.000) per mailbox - no problems. The mail server's been running completely up2date RHAS4 on IBM e23x iron. We're going over to RHAS5 on 64bit IBM hardware this summer and shall be keeping SM and Courier IMAP, even though Red Hat touts Dovecot :) Worth mentioning that SM's no the only client, people use Thunderbird, Evolution, Outlook Express or any client they choose, if mailing from home or wherever.
