For AUTH PLAIN, the simplest and safest client is good old telnet:
$ perl -e 'use MIME::Base64; print encode_base64("\0brian\@example.com\0passwd");'
AGJyaWFuQGV4YW1wbGUuY29tAHBhc3N3ZA==
Note the position of the embedded nulls - they are important (RFC 2595 sec 6)
SMTP: telnet to port 25 and type "AUTH PLAIN thatstring"
IMAP: telnet to port 143 and type "A001 AUTHENTICATE PLAIN thatstring"
