I'm stumped!

I think now that "hosteddomains" really, really means hosted. I had hoped it would mean "hosted here somewhere", accept the mail, and forward to the relay listed in esmtproutes. This is not the case.

Maybe my logic is flawed:

1. Accept SMTP from the Internet.

2. On "RCPT TO:", validate recipient via LDAP.

2a. If recipient is known (from LDAP lookup), forward to relay listed in esmtproutes for the domain.

2b. If recipient is *not* know (from LDAP lookup), "550 User unknown".

Seems simple. But the existence of hosteddomains results in only local deliver - not good as this is just a gateway machine.

And having no hosteddomains file results in *everything* being accepted. Then the "550 User unknown" doesn't occur until the gateway has accepted the message and SMTP's to the relay for the domain ("relay").

Is there some way authldap, courierldapaliasd, or both, can be used to do this?

Thanks for any and all insight...

I'm replacing my mail gateway machine - used by the Courier server as the relay for everything to/from the Internet. Currently, nothing to the domain gets bounced until the mail server gets it. I've installed the new gateway with...

[root]# rpm -q -a | grep cour
courier-maildrop-0.40.1-1.7.3
courier-0.40.1-1.7.3
courier-ldap-0.40.1-1.7.3

... built from tarball, so all the other packages are there, too. My hope is to have this new gateway lookup rcpt addresses, and bounce or accept the message accordingly.

(of course this machine will also be spamtrapping non-existent addresses, filtering for nasty attachment types, possibly virus checking, fun stuff like that...)

It appears that if I build OpenLDAP with Kerberos, I'd then be able to ldapsearch to my Windows 2000 Domain Controller, which has the valid mail addresses. Is that all Courier needs on the LDAP side of things?

Thanks...
