I never had to set those, Mozilla used my inline Sent, Drafts, and Trash folders just fine.
Mozilla 1.2 and better get that right by default. Previous versions required you to explicitly set the full folder path.
If they are not inline, you may have to though, never tested as I don't like subfolders of INBOX.

Yep. Sounds like the setting that David was looking for, specifically, was the folder path. When set to "INBOX." children of the INBOX will be displayed as its level, rather than below it.
