Hi all
I tried the "Jason Solution" but it doesn't work for me!
I said that it could be a Courier misconfiguration because I tried to substitute myself to an IMAP client:
following is the hardcopy of the session:

# telnet  imapmailserver 143
* OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 UIDPLUS CHILDREN NAMESPACE THREAD=ORDEREDSUBJECT THRE
AD=REFERENCES SORT QUOTA IDLE STARTTLS] Courier-IMAP ready. Copyright 1998-2003
Double Precision, Inc.  See COPYING for distribution information.
LOGIN username cleartextpassword
LOGIN NO Error in IMAP command received by server.
CAPABILITY
* CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 UIDPLUS CHILDREN NAMESPACE THREAD=ORDEREDSUBJECT THREAD=R
EFERENCES SORT QUOTA IDLE STARTTLS
CAPABILITY OK CAPABILITY completed

OK, this could prove nothing but...my "real" client (Eudora) is configured to not use STARTTLS...could it be the problem???? Have I to reconfigure CAPABILITY ???
I'm going to try...
Stay tuned!

I had a similar problem with SquirrelMail 1.4.0 and Courier 0.42.2. To
make it work, I had to make a change to the imap_general.php file (part of
SquirrelMail) on line 287:

Original (does not work):
  $query = 'LOGIN "' . quoteimap($username) .  '" "' . quoteimap($password) . '"';
My version (works):
  $query = "login \"$username\" \"$password\"\n";

I have not yet sent a bug report to the SquirrelMail folks. Not sure if
LOGIN or login really makes a difference, or if it is part of the
processing that the 'quoteimap' function performs.
