It's not about user ignorance. Computers are supposed to make our lives easier, not make us jump through hoops. I won't waste user time with a protection that can be trivially circumvented.

It can only be circumvented by the user who's subscribing. If they do that, then obviously they're making that choice conciously.

If courier's mailing list manager were popular, do you really think that all malicious autoresponders won't be adding "yes" to the subject line five years from now?

What malicious autoresponders? When Courier's MLM gets a subscribe request, it sends a confirmation to the address that's going to be subscribed. The user who gets the confirmation request must reply properly. Only that user could have an autoresponder that might interfere. If the MLM required only the original subject line, a stupid autoresponder might subscribe him.

This enables malicious action on the part of a third party who knows that the target user has a stupid autoresponder. He could send a subscribe request, and the stupid autoresponder would cooperate to subscribe a user without any real interaction.

However, when Courier's MLM requires a modification to the subject line, a third party is not in a position to use stupid autoresponders to subscribe users. A "malicious" autoresponder would have had to be installed and configured by the user or his mail system admin.

It's my server and my mailing list. I don't see why the list software can't allow me to make the decision about weather this feature is useful.

You have the option of using more convenient, less secure software. There's plenty out there to choose from.
