The same argument applies to the use of "stupid autoresponders".  I
don't see why Courier MLM should require a manual marking of

If the MLM is going to go through the trouble to verify that a user really wants to be subscribed, it should do *something* to make sure that it's not going to interpret a very common problem as confirmation that a user wants to be subscribed.

Software should be reliable. If it's not reliable, you might as well skip it. Better to have nothing and know what you have than to have something unreliable and believe that you have something you don't.
