So if db3 works, I'm fine, but I wonder how many other people are frustrated
with some sort of gdbm failure - you say you saw it before - was it the same
environment as me?

Not exactly, but close. It was FreeBSD 5.0 updated to R10, IIRC. I might have some more information if I ever get access to the server again.


I'm perfectly willing to help diagnose the problem - the setup exhibiting
this is my own, so I can test as needed

If I produce a test case on the 5.0 box that fails, I might send it to you for testing on 4.8. I don't use BSD often enough to really give you instructions to do much on your own... sorry :(
