I'd like to help, but I think your debugging / C abilities are beyond mine.
I am using gdbm support in other things and haven't had any other
complaints - not that that proves anything, but if there is anything I can
do to help, let me know.

Interesting that no one else has responded - do you think the combination is
that uncommon?

Well, I got the debugging information I'd gathered before.  However,
malloc doesn't appear anywhere in the stack trace I have.  I guess I'll
have to find some disk space and install FreeBSD to figure out what the
problem really is.
