Ok - fixed the first issue (the HOSTNAME was in locals AND in
esmtpacceptmailfor / hosteddomains - though this never caused me a problem
before) and retested - still not working.

Here are the combinations:

>From ANYONE TO hosteddomain NOT A RELAYCLIENT = ERROR
>From ANYONE TO locals NOT A RELAYCLIENT = OK
>From ANYONE TO hosteddomain & A RELIACLIENT = OK
>From ANYONE TO hosteddomain & AUTHENTICATEDSMTP = OK

So basically, normal reception of email from remote computers doesn't work
and fails with that gdbm error:

courieresmtpd: gdbm fatal: couldn't init cache
courieresmtpd: submitclient: EOF from submit.

Any authenticated SMTP or mail destined to a "local" domain works fine.

All other functions (aliases, maildrop processing, etc.) work find through
authenticated SMTP.

Sorry for the poor explanation - It always seems clearer when I'm writing it
;-)

Thanks. Appreciate the help - this box is supposed to take over some load in
a few hours... nothing like working ot a deadline - eh?

Well, another issue is that you cannot have the same domain listed in both
locals and hosteddomains. One or the other, but not both.

Earlier you said that taking the sending IP address out of smtpaccess
removes the problem. The two are completely orthogonal to each other. If
you're saying that the presence of RELAYCLIENT is a factor, than you must be
saying that it doesn't matter what the recipient address is; the only factor
is the sending IP address.

Now you think the issue is with the recipient domain after all.

You need to decide what is the deciding factor, and go from there.
