They use a custom protocol to talk to each other, instead of plain-vanilla IMAP.Is there a list of benefits somewhere why one would want to use SMAP?
A couple. 1) Better support for internationalized folder names2) No restrictions on folder names (IMAP can't use periods or slashes in folder names)
3) About 25% faster downloading of attachments4) Do not need to transmit the message twice when sending mail (once to send it via SMTP, second time to upload it to the send mail folder). The message is simultaneously sent and saved in the folder.
