If DNS or ident is a problem, there will be a delay.  Try adding 
-nodnslookup and -noidentlookup to TCPDOPTS in /etc/courier/esmtpd.

If you still have problems, you should remove the entire installation of 
courier, and begin again.  You may have skipped a step.  If you can 
build rpm packages, you should do so.  This is the most reliable way to 
install the software and avoid mistakes.

If you reinstall and still have problems, use "tail -f" to watch your 
mail log while you connect to port 25, and see what is logged there. 
Also, leave the telnet session alone for 90 seconds, and see if anything 
happens in that time.
