No, it isn't.  Courier doesn't require a positive response in order to 
work.  If you have no name servers at all, clients will still be able to 
connect.  However, many problems with delayed connections are caused by 
a DNS lookup which takes a long time, rather than failing immediately.

Even when no name server is available, /etc/hosts isn't used.  Rather 
than arguing that it is, I suggest that you try to understand how 
Courier's tcpd works.  Ask questions if you need to.  Your current 
behavior is rude.

I understand that.  Mature people do not need to behave rudely when they 
are upset.  It does not make the situation better.  It will not get you 
better help from the members of this list.  It will not help you 
understand what problems are affecting your installation.

Please: Be patient, and be cooperative.  You are asking for help on a 
list of volunteers.  Their good will, alone, grants you their assistance.
