You can't use the sqwebmail tarball to update the sqwebmail binary in Courier, in any case. It might be possible to build Courier and just copy over the sqwebmail binary, but I really don't remember every change since 0.53.3, and know if it's going to work, or not.
If you did not build Courier yourself, but used the RPM build procedure, upgrading should be as simple as building new RPMs, and installing them.
