This thought did cross my mind. I did this on one of my own servers and it solved the problem, and in fact I put a revised tarball up at http://www.fmp.com/downloads/courier-0.59.0.tar.bz2 which includes the missing m4 files. I'll do that. Unfortunately, Courier seems to be a bit of an orphan in Gentoo. I note the "maintainer-needed" assignment for many Courier bugs. Thanks for picking up the slack on this.
