We have used buddypress before, it was pretty good in the beginning, but as you use it more, the bugs will kill you.
Now we are switching back to Wordpress, have lost a great deal of functions of buddypress but at least we could keep the bugs at minimum level. A couple of weeks ago we have teamed up with a social media consultancy firm to develop our own social network platform. The beta will be ready in two months time.
