Dear Dave, Thank you for bringing out this question. Copycat and cloning issues (in Chinese term: Shanzhai) are indeed quite severe in China. But we have a bit different view on this from the major western mainstream media. Many of us don't see copycats as the big threat to creativity, from many levels, I even believe it creates opportunity to harness the creativity. Here are some researches done by IDEO: http://patterns.ideo.com/issue/shanzhai/ We have invited them to present this research at Xindanwei and the discussion with audience(mostly designers)has lasted several hours long. See: http://xindanwei.com/lang/en/2011/01/shanzhai-design-as-an-open-platform-for-business-innovation-pattern-from-ideo-ideo
The consumer electronics industry in Shenzhen of Guangdong Province are the perfect example how all the shanzhai manufacturers collaborate on a mutual beneficial agreement to achieve efficiency and cost innovation. http://designmind.frogdesign.com/blog/shanzhai-crossing-the-line-from-copying-to-innovation.html One more example is about Copycat of Chines New Year gala performance ( shown on Chinese official TV with selected program), the copycat uses exact same format and design of the official one but opened its content to many talents on internet, it is broadcasted on internet and gives ordinary people an opportunity to be on the "gala show". 在 2011年2月2日 上午12:43,Dave Bunnell <[email protected]> 写道: > Hello, > > Meaning no disrespect: here, stateside, we hear constantly in (our) > national-daily-news that copyright infringement of every-kind is of national > proportion where you are in China.
