I think its just reflex to use humor when human beings feel this sort of discomfort.
Maybe the bathroom could include some sort of expanded wash up facilities and let that speak for us. My father in law used to tell his son his "shirt" smelled bad. For the future, how about mentioning hygiene in the house rules?
