Ivan took the words out of my mouth. :) My biz partner came from an arts background and was the cofounder of a pretty successful collective here in Philly. When we sat down to figure out the business model for Indy Hall, the art collective was one of the models we looked at most closely in terms of strengths and weaknesses, and learned a LOT that has served us well.
The twist, of course, is the number of artists that have approached us since saying "I want to do something like Indy Hall for artists", and I have to break it to them that we stole the idea...from them...and made it better. The M Night Shyamalan twist is that even though there's been so much interest we've had to work hard to become more friendly to the art community. Many of our local artists admired Indy Hall, but didn't think of it as a place they could work. It took a fair amount of education, not so much about what coworking is, but about how to think about their work. "Sure, you might do some of your production work here...but what about the BUSINESS of being an artist, or working with cross-medium collaborators? If they want to improve on either of those fronts (and you won't find many artists who won't jump at the chance to learn how to make more money), coworking can be a serious boon.
